Staying Compliant with Italy's Garante Guidelines: Let Consentmo Guide You Every Step of the Way
Starting 10th of January, 2022 the Italian Garante requires all websites to comply with the newly published regulations for the GDPR Garante’s privacy. By default, Consentmo app complies with most of the requirements. However, there are specific settings you should be aware of in order to configure the app as per the regulations. Let’s go through each one of the steps:
Step 1: Add a Privacy Policy page link to the Cookie Consent Bar
After you generate your Privacy Policy page, make sure to link it in the Privacy Policy Link field under the Cookie Consent Bar tab. Here is how to add it:
- Navigate to the Cookie Consent Bar tab
- Add the Privacy Policy link to the dedicated link field.
Step 2: Add a general Cookie description
You are able to add general cookie information in the Cookie Consent Popup Header Description text box:
- Navigate to the Cookie Consent Bar tab
- Go to the Cookie Management section
- Add the information in the Cookie Consent Popup Header Description field. There you can describe the consent time validity (which must be more than six months) and any specific information valid for your local compliance.
We recommend adding a cookie description to each individual cookie. By using the Cookie Information Panel you can include the information about the cookies in the Preferences Popup.
Note: Keep in mind that the Cookie Information Panel is available for Premium Plan users only.
More information, on how the Cookie Information Panel works, you will be able to find in the video below:
We have set up default cookie category descriptions. However, if you need to edit/add more information, here is how you can do that:
- Navigate to the Cookie Consent Bar tab
- Scroll down to the Cookie Management section and add the description you want to appear for each cookie category.
Step 3: Provide a way for the customers to withdraw their consent
Withdrawing consent should be as easy as giving it. That is why we would recommend adding a link or a button to a page that will trigger the Preferences Popup again on your website. This way your website visitors will be able to change their preferences.
You can easily do that by adding a button or a link to your Privacy Policy page: 11. Is there a way to show the Preferences popup after a visitor has already accepted the cookies?
Note: Keep in mind that due to limitations from Shopify the code will not work if you try to add it to a Legal page (Settings > Legal)
We would recommend adding it to a page that is not from type "Legal", for example: "About Us", "Terms and Conditions", etc. You can also create a Privacy Policy page yourself, follow the steps shown in the video:
Step 4: Set the Initial State of the Cookie Consent Bar to: Block All Cookies Except the Strictly Required ones
The initial state of the app must block all cookie categories (Analytics and Statistics, Marketing and Retargeting, Functional Cookies). Here is how to do that:
- Navigate to the Cookie Consent Bar tab
- Scroll down to the Initial State of the Cookie Consent Bar and block all the cookie categories
Step 5: Configure the Close button in the Cookie Consent Bar
First, make sure that the Close button is enabled. Next, you should change the text in the Close Button Text box located in the Cookie Consent Bar tab. Below you can see how you can do that:
- Navigate to the Cookie Consent Bar tab
- Go to the Close Button Text field and change the text to:
Continue without agreeing →
To be fully compliant with the Italian guidelines, you need to make sure that the action when the Close button is clicked is set to Block All Cookies. In order to configure that you have to:
- Navigate to the Cookie Consent Bar tab
- Scroll down to Action When the "Close" Button is Clicked option and select all cookies to stay blocked

Step 6: Clear Cookie Bar design
Choose one of the default designs of the app upon installation. Make sure that the content of the Cookie Bar and Preferences Popup is easy to read when changing the style options and adding CSS code changes. Remember that no "cookie walls" are allowed.
Additional Note: Our app is compliant with the Web AIM checklist.
Conclusion
Those are all of the requirements that you need to comply with in order to make sure that you are on top of the latest regulations regarding the Italian GDPR.
